NEET statistics UK 2026: 981,000 young people, 13.0%

The latest official figures show almost a million 16 to 24-year-olds out of school, work and training, and most of them aren't looking for a job. If your plans stalled this year, here's what the numbers say and how to keep the gap short.

The latest NEET statistics for the UK show that 981,000 young people aged 16 to 24 were not in education, employment or training in April to June 2026: 13.0% of the age group.[1] That's 30,000 more than a year earlier, though 30,000 fewer than in the first three months of 2026.[1]

The Office for National Statistics published the figures on 27 August 2026, and the next update is due on 26 November.[1] If you're a parent watching a plan stall, or a student who isn't sure what comes after this year, here's what the numbers say and what you can do about them.

How many young people are NEET in the UK?

Here's the picture for April to June 2026:[1]

Not in education, employment or trainingNumberShare of the age group
All 16 to 24-year-olds981,00013.0%
Young men, 16 to 24530,00013.7%
Young women, 16 to 24451,00012.3%
18 to 24-year-olds894,00015.2%

Most of the rise on the year came from young men: their number went up by 25,000, against 4,000 for young women.[1] And the ONS itself asks for care with short-term changes, because some volatility remains in its survey estimates, especially in detailed breakdowns with smaller samples, NEET among them.[1] So read the level, not the wobble from one quarter to the next.

Are NEET young people looking for work?

Mostly not. Of the 981,000, 393,000 were unemployed. The other 588,000 were economically inactive.[1]

That second group is the one to think about. Someone who's job-hunting has a plan, even if it hasn't worked yet. Someone who's stopped looking often doesn't, and the longer that lasts, the harder the restart feels. The figures don't say why each person is there, so we won't guess.

What does this mean for your family?

A year out isn't the problem. A year out with no start date is. If this year didn't go to plan, the most useful thing you can do this term is put a date on the next step, whatever it is.

  • Applying through UCAS again? For 2027 entry, the date that matters is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time, the equal-consideration date for most undergraduate courses.[3] UCAS publishes its October-deadline figures for 2027 entry on 29 October 2026.[2]
  • Not ready to apply? Work, an apprenticeship or a resit are all real plans, as long as each one has a start date you can write down.
  • Want something practical abroad? That's where our route comes in. It's one option among several, not the answer for everyone.

How does the BHMS route in Switzerland work?

At BHMS in Lucerne we run the Certificate in Hospitality and Business Operations, a six-month semester.[5] It's designed to bridge into Year 1 of our bachelor degrees in Global Business Management, Hotel and Hospitality Management or Culinary Arts.[5] We built it for students who finished Year 11 but didn't finish A-levels or IB.[8] Complete the semester, and Year 1 is the next step.[8]

One thing to be clear about: the Certificate is our pathway into Year 1 at BHMS, and only that. If a UK university place is the goal, the UCAS dates above are the ones that count.

There's a real entry bar: you need to be at least 17, with five iGCSEs including Maths and English (or equivalent), and English at 5.0 / B2 or equivalent.[5] Our admissions team looks at each applicant's certificates individually.[8] The semester starts four times a year, in February, May, August and November, so nobody has to wait a full year to begin.[5] It costs CHF 26'525, all-inclusive, with shared accommodation.[6] That's about £24,100 at the European Central Bank's reference rates for 22 October 2026.[4]

The paid work comes later, with the bachelor. Every bachelor year is six months of study and six months of paid internship in a Swiss company.[7] And every year you learn business and hospitality side by side.[7]

Your next step

Sit down together this week and write the next start date on paper, whichever route it belongs to. If Lucerne is on the list, read our page for parents and then take the two-minute Fit Check to see whether the Certificate suits the results you have.
