UCAS 2027 entry: 76,600 applied by 15 October deadline
UCAS published its first 2027-entry figures on 29 October 2026. They cover about one in ten applicants, but they tell you what to do before 13 January 2027.
UCAS counted 76,600 applicants for 2027 entry by the 15 October 2026 deadline, down 3.2% from 79,160 a year earlier.[1] For most people, the next date that matters is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time, the equal consideration date for most undergraduate courses.[2]
UCAS released these first figures on 29 October 2026.[1] Here's what they show, what they don't, and what you can do if your plans for next autumn are still open.
What do the UCAS 15 October 2026 figures show?
This early deadline covers Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses.[2] It's a small slice of the market. These applications usually make up about 10% of all the undergraduate applications UCAS receives in a year.[1]
| Group | 2026 (for 2027 entry) | 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| All applicants, all ages and domiciles | 76,600 | 79,160 | -3.2% |
| UK 18-year-olds | 39,020 | 41,010 | -4.9% |
| UK 19-year-olds | 6,880 | 5,920 | +16% |
| UK mature applicants (21 and over) | 6,810 | 6,600 | +3.2% |
| Medicine applicants | 25,840 | 25,770 | +0.3% |
| Medicine reapplicants | 4,420 | 3,380 | up |
| International applicants | 22,560 | 24,350 | -7.3% |
Source for every row: UCAS.[1]
Two lines stand out. More 19-year-olds are applying, which fits the rise in medicine reapplicants.[1] Applicants from the most disadvantaged backgrounds fell in England, Scotland and Wales. In England the figure was 15,730, down 350.[1] UCAS's Chief Executive called that decline "more concerning".[1]
What these numbers don't tell you
They tell you nothing about the roughly nine in ten applicants who apply later, so don't use them to guess how competitive your course will be. They count applications, not offers or places. The 13 January figures will be the first to cover the main cycle, and they're not out yet.
What does this mean for you?
If you're applying to Oxford, Cambridge or a medicine, dentistry or veterinary course, your date has already passed. A late application to these highly competitive courses is unusual, so check with the university before you assume anything.[2]
For everyone else, the date is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time, just under eleven weeks away. If your complete application, academic reference included, reaches UCAS by then, it gets equal consideration. Universities can still accept later ones if the course has places, but nothing promises they'll be looked at.[2]
Keep the rest of the calendar in view:
- Extra opens on 25 February 2027, if you've used all five choices and hold no offers.[2]
- UCAS sends applications received by 30 June 2027 on to universities and colleges. After that, they go into Clearing, which opens on 2 July 2027.[2]
- You can apply for 2027 entry until 23 September 2027 at 18:00 UK time.[2]
If your predicted grades are shaky, or you aren't sure UCAS is your route, you don't need to decide in November. Apply by January if a UK degree is your plan, and keep a second route open alongside it.
A second route that doesn't depend on results day
One option is the Certificate in Hospitality and Business Operations at BHMS in Lucerne. It runs one semester (six months) and bridges into Year 1 of the BHMS bachelor degrees: Global Business Management, Hotel and Hospitality Management or Culinary Arts. It also includes a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Business, equivalent in size to one A-level. It leads into BHMS degrees only, and you move on once you've completed the semester.
Entry isn't a formality. You need to be at least 17, hold five iGCSEs including Maths and English or equivalent, and have English at 5.0 / B2 or equivalent. The fee is CHF 26'525, all-inclusive with shared accommodation.
There are starts every February, May, August and November. A-level results arrive in mid August, so if they don't go as hoped, November is the next start after them. If you'd rather leave the UCAS question open until then, that's the one to look at.
Next step
Put 13 January 2027 in your calendar first. Then, to see whether the Certificate fits as a back-up, take the two-minute Fit Check and look through the intake dates for the start that lines up with your results.
